Welcome to our new head coach, Winthrop John Edwards!
The New Bedford Rowing Center is honored to have Coach Edwards join our crew. Coach Edwards is the current head rowing coach at Mass Maritime Academy, where he has built a program that pushes young people toward excellence. Coach Edwards will continue his work with Mass Maritime as he builds NBRC's summer youth rowing programs and starts a competitive junior team. His expertise will also contribute to master's rowing.
Coach Edward's commitment to creating rowing opportunities on the South Coast aligns with the NBRC's mission, and he joins the NBRC at a time of exciting growth. In the last two years, NBRC's membership has doubled. The City of New Bedford has worked with us on plans for a proposed new boathouse on the Acushnet River. And we have created youth opportunities in partnership with New Bedford Research and Robotics and "STEM to Stern" — a national organization that combines rowing and science/technology/math.
Coach Edwards knows how to build a rowing program from the ground up, and his enthusiasm for the sport is infectious. His own "love affair with rowing" began late in life, Coach Edwards says. These days, as both a coach and masters rower, Coach Edwards competes fiercely in regattas, teaches young people to embody resilience, and delights in a relentless pursuit of excellence.
As a Level III certified coach with US Rowing, Coach Edwards brings the highest possible level of expertise to New Bedford. And we can't wait to get on the water with him!
